The original wooden Hernando Hotel was built in 1858 by Major John Parsons. It was located on North Main Street. After a fire destroyed that building, a "new" Hernando Hotel was constructed on the exact same site in 1885 to accommodate the arriving railroad travelers. Looking north from Main Street onto Howell Avenue in 1915, one can notice how smooth the streets are by now. On the corner is Thompson's Drug Store, which later evolves into Hope's Drug Store in the 1920s when Mr. Thompson's daughter Margie marries Walter Hope. It stayed in operation until 1963.
