  • 291 East Jefferson Street – Hensley Chiropractic Clinic

Welcome back to our historic walking tour of downtown Brooksville, Florida—a quaint city with roots stretching back to 1856, full of stories that bring its past to life! As we wander through these charming streets, our next stop is 291 East Jefferson Street, a spot with a fascinating history that’s evolved from a cornerstone of community healthcare to a modern-day social hub. Let’s dive into the legacy of the Hensley Chiropractic Clinic and the building’s exciting transformation.

Picture this: it’s 1953, and Brooksville is buzzing with post-World War II growth. That’s when Dr. Earl Hensley opened the Hensley Chiropractic Clinic right here at 291 East Jefferson Street, in a newly built structure designed to serve the town’s growing healthcare needs. For over 60 years, the Hensley family dedicated themselves to keeping Brooksville healthy, with Dr. Earl’s son, Dr. Donald J. Hensley, joining the practice in 1974 after graduating from the National College of Chiropractic. Together, they provided chiropractic care—think spinal adjustments, pain relief, and wellness support—to generations of locals, making this clinic a true pillar of the community. Whether it was easing back pain for a farmer or helping a neighbor recover from an injury, the Hensleys were there, offering care and comfort in a time when small-town doctors were like family.

The building itself, constructed in 1953, reflects the practical architecture of the mid-20th century. At 3,343 square feet on a spacious 18,205-square-foot lot, it was perfectly suited for a busy clinic right in the heart of downtown. Its location on Jefferson Street, one of Brooksville’s main thoroughfares, made it easy for residents to pop in, whether they were coming from nearby South Brooksville Avenue or heading to the Hernando State Bank just down the road.

The Hensley Chiropractic Clinic wasn’t just about healthcare—it was a symbol of stability and trust in Brooksville. Dr. Donald Hensley, who practiced here for over 40 years, carried on his father’s legacy with a deep commitment to the town. In fact, the clinic’s impact was so profound that when Dr. Hensley faced health challenges in 2014, his mentee, Dr. Nathan Carter, stepped in to take over the practice. Dr. Carter had interned with Dr. Hensley back in 2006, learning the ropes of chiropractic care, and he was determined to continue the tradition. While Dr. Carter kept the Hensley legacy alive, he moved the practice to a new spot at 608 Decatur Avenue, renaming it Carter Chiropractic and Wellness Center—a fitting way to honor the past while looking to the future.

Now, here’s where the story takes an unexpected turn! After the clinic moved out in 2014, this historic building at 291 East Jefferson Street found a new purpose. Today, it’s home to the Broad Street Brewing Company, Brooksville’s first local brewery, which opened its doors to rave reviews. The brewery has transformed this old 1953 chiropractic building into a vibrant gathering spot, where locals and visitors alike can sip on craft beers like a rich Milk Stout or enjoy guest taps while food trucks serve up delicious bites outside. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with a nod to the building’s history that adds a layer of charm to every visit. It’s a perfect example of how Brooksville embraces its past while making room for new traditions—turning a place of healing into a place of connection and celebration.

As we stand here on Jefferson Street, let’s take a moment to appreciate the journey of this building—from the Hensley Chiropractic Clinic’s decades of service to its current role as a brewery breathing new life into downtown Brooksville. It’s a testament to the town’s ability to honor its history while adapting to the present, keeping the spirit of community alive in every brick. Ready to explore more of Brooksville’s hidden gems? Let’s keep walking!
