Wilbur “Pop” Good
“Wilbur owned Pop's Pool Hall at 161 E Jefferson Street. I lived down the street and would walk there after school or summer and shoot pool with downtown guys. This was 1958-63. Pops was Wilbur "Pop" Good who at one time was a big league ballplayer and was on the cover of that baseball issue I did a few months ago. Wilbur Good pitched for the old NY Highlanders (Yankees) as far back as 1905. He later became an outfielder and played for other teams until 1918. In Brooksville, he later became a manager of really good local teams 1920's-30's.”- Robert Martinez - Old Brooksville in Photos and Stories
Towards the end of his Deadball Era days, Good played for the Chicago White Sox. Good had married Grundy Frances Lott on October 16, 1912, in Chicago. The couple purchased a home and small farm in Brooksville. Grundy would accompany Wilbur in the summers and their son, Wilbur, Jr., was born in Chicago in 1915. Good spent his ‘post baseball days’ working in Downtown Brooksville.
The Goods stayed close to home after that enjoying the Florida sunshine. Wilbur would occasionally get together with fellow retired major leaguers. Grundy passed away in 1957, ending their marriage at 45 years. She lived to see the birth of her granddaughter, fortunately. Wilbur passed away on December 30, 1963. The couple are buried side-by-side in the Brooksville Cemetery.
