Photo Info

Sara “Sallie” and her sister Grace were the daughters of John “JC” Burwell and Lucy Whitfield Cobb Burwell.  They were born in Brooksville and are pictured here in 1902.  JC seemed to love innovation - he was responsible for bringing telephone service to Brooksville in 1900, owned the first car in town, and, according to Robert Martinez in his book, Brooksville,  his home was the first Brooksville to have running water and electricity in their home.  JC was Editor of the Brooksville Star newspaper and served as Clerk of the Court in 1916.  Both girls attended Hernando High with Sallie graduating as Salutatorian in 1912. The family moved to Tallahassee in 1916, where Grace met John Williams Jr., marrying him in 1928.
